  • Some of the young athletes at Fight for Peace academy in London are also due to fight soon. Their Muay Thai bouts will take place on October the 16th in Scala – Kings Cross (London). This follows on from an excellent performance earlier this month in Shoreditch during an interclub competition. Everyone at LUTA wishes them the best of luck.

Rio de Janeiro

Fight for Peace International (the charity with whom LUTA shares 50% of its profits) released news of an event it’s young athletes participated in. www.fightforpeace.net reported:

"On August 27th, Bento Ribeiro Dantas – Fight for Peace satellite project and area within Complexo da Maré, hosted its first boxing and martial arts championship.  The event was organised in partnership with the local Residents Association.  Several young members from both the satellite project and academy headquarters competed against competitors from clubs across Rio de Janeiro.  Five different boxing and wrestling matches took place.

Fight for Peace athletes successfully won four out of the five boxing matches and two out of the five wrestling matches.  The event was not only an opportunity for the young people to practice their technical and tactical abilities but also acted as a social opportunity, bringing people together from across Complexo da Maré – one of the aims of the Maré United project."

Milton Keynes

LUTA Ambassador Ebe Ghansah recently hosted a string of outstanding seminars by some of the world’s leading fighters including World BJJ Champion Braulio Estima. This was the last seminar that Braulio agreed to do before his recent win over BJJ icon Jacare in an ADCC superfight. Another surprise instructor was none other than LUTA’s Ambassador Manager Fergus Dullaghan who conducted a judo for BJJ seminar at the Gracie Barra Milton Keyenes Academy.

"Redefining Fightwear" LUTA reviewed

by Fergus Dullaghan 30. September 2011 04:52

LUTA was recently reviewed by Fightingfitmartialarts.co.uk and this is what they had to say:

Luta – Redefining Fightwear

In Brazilian Portuguese, the word LUTA means to fight, to struggle, to never give up.  As a brand, Luta are pushing to improve the lives of young people in communities that suffer from high levels of crime and violence.  They do this by sharing their profits with Fight for Peace International, a global charity that promotes the use of boxing and martial arts training, combined with education and personal development programmes, to reach out to these communities.

Their clothing breaks the mold of the usual combat sports branding that often features brash designs and/or over complex graphics.  Their styling and branding are both simple and clean and the quality of their range is without question.

I’ve been sporting the Luta Classic Grey T-Shirt for the last few weeks and am very impressed with the quality and cut of the garment.  Their regular fit range is made of high quality 100% cotton and is designed for comfort and style.  I opted for a medium and am glad to say the sizing was perfect, with a comfortable loose fit.  So far, I’ve warn it for several kettlebell sessions, which has really put it through the mill, forcing it through multiple washes.  To date, there has been no visible impact on the shape and feel of the shirt, or the logos on front and back.

The other thing I like about the Luta range is, as mentioned earlier, the subtlety of the branding.  I would never usually wear Fightwear brands clothing outside of the gym but because of the clean cut nature of the graphics, and the message the company portrays, the shirt doesn’t smack of the same image of other, more dominant brands attire.

If you are looking for some new boxing and MMA training gear, or day to day street wear, that is different to most brands out there, you should definitely pay their website a visit and help support a growing UK brand with an inspiring ethos.

Recipe for success: Yolanda Hinchliffe

by Fergus Dullaghan 27. September 2011 06:00

If you want to succeed as an boxer/fighter and an athlete you need to really take stock of what you are eating. You can spend all day in the ring and all evening on the bags, but if you are fueling your body in the wrong way, then your stamina, endurance and recovery will all suffer. In a weight conscious sport there is a fine balance between calories taken in and calories expended and you need to be very aware of what you are eating and at what times. Protein is vital for muscle repair and growth, to work out your requirements all you need to do is multiply your weight in pounds by 0.7 and that will give you the grams of protein you need in a day. Carbohydrates are your body's primary and preferred source of energy. They are easy to digest and quick to release glycogen (sugars). Make sure that you stick to carbohydrates with a higher fibre content as these will keep you fuller for longer as they release their energy slower. Antioxidants may seem an odd thing to mention but they are more important to an athlete in training than to anyone else. When you endurance train you increase the amount of free radicals in your body, these are the main culprits behind DNA and cell damage. The more you train the more you need and you can find them in foods such as blueberries, nuts, spinach and green tea.

The basics of a good food day should follow these guidelines:
-Breakfast of wholegrain carbohydrates such as porridge with milk and raisins
- Always eat within 20minutes of finishing training and make sure it is protein rich such as yoghurt with nuts and seeds or a small protein shake
- lunch and dinner should contain sources of fats, carbs and protein such as beef stir fry or salmon and vegetables
- Always include a variety of colourful fruit and vegetables in your diet to help increase your antioxidant levels
- Always drink 1.5litres of water a day to replace lost fluids
- Steer clear of processed foods and fizzy drinks

Recipe for success:
The perfect protein shake - this contains pure whey powder which is easily digested and absorbed by your body.
1 medium banana
2 tablespoons pure whey powder
1 1/2 cups oat milk (or cows milk)
5 strawberries
A few ice cubes
Blend and drink straight after a tough workout for optimum results

LUTA caught up with MMA coach Tam Khan.

by Fergus Dullaghan 15. September 2011 05:26

LUTA’s fight ambassador manager Fergus Dullaghan caught up recently with MMA fighter and strength conditioning coach Tam Khan. Tam, who is the latest pro-fighter to convert to wearing LUTA clothing, was back in the UK and training at his old stomping ground with TSG MMA.

Ordinarily, however Khan is based in sunny Dubai where he is the head coach of the increasingly famous Contender Gym. Contender has seen the likes of Amir Khan, Prince Naseem Hamed, Wanderlei Silva, Royce Gracie and Anderson “the Spider” Silva come through the door in recent times. Even Jean-Claude Van Damme has been spied training there!

Tam had this to say about LUTA’s pioneering laser bonded Rash guard:

“The top is brilliant. It fits well and it’s actually very comfortable. A lot of the time with fight wear you find it can be very tight around the neck and back of the arms. It’s a great design and I’m looking forward to representing the brand in Dubai, I think it will be really popular over there”.

In reference to LUTA’s profit share with Fight for Peace Khan said: “I also like what this top represents. It’s not being made purely for the money.”

LUTA Ambassador Nilton Garcia

by Fergus Dullaghan 6. September 2011 09:26

LUTA’s latest Ambassador, the 2008 European Champion in the absolute division is pictured giving a leg lock masterclass in the pages of this months Fighting Fit magazine. Nilton is originally from the favelas of Sao Paulo where he trained under Rocian Gracie of the famous Gracie family. Now a black belt under Roger Gracie, Nilton runs his own academies in Portugal and the UK. Nilton was instantly supportive of the LUTA link to the Fight for Peace charity as he has often worked in support of young people from similar backgrounds in the past –frequently offering them free Jiu jitsu classes. When Fighting Fit caught up with him in his school in Camden town (London) Nilton chose none other than yours truly to be his demonstration partner (It was an honour – though a slightly painful one!).

While we were chilling out after the shoot Nilton casually mentioned that he was off that afternoon to train with Roger Gracie, Braulio Estima and George St Pierre. Nilton then sent me proof in a photo of the four of them working hard in the gym via his iphone.

More information on LUTA Ambassador Nilton Garcia is available here: http://www.bjjinlondon.com/nilton.html  If you are looking for BJJ in North London, Nilton’s academy would be well worth checking out!

LUTA story in Jiu Jitsu Style Magazine

by Fergus Dullaghan 2. August 2011 06:32

Europe's first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and lifestyle magazine reviews the LUTA story in the July/August edition. Featuring interviews with BJJ legends Roger Gracie, Lucio Rodrigues, Victor Estima and Carlson Gracie Jr.

Jiu Jitsu style wrote " A new favela-based fightwear company is taking the world by storm. LUTA only launched on May 18th but has already caught attention of CNN, the BBC and magazines like Forbes and Sport. It has also been endorsed by elite fighters like former world judo champion Neil Adams, European Muay Thai champion Daniel Sams, Irish Judo champion & martial arts writer Fergus Dullaghan, and Brazilian boxing champion and London 2012 potential Roberto Custodio. Gracie Barra instructor Ebe Ghansah wore a LUTA rash guard and MMA shorts during his recent Guinness World record breaking BJJ class and even actors like Idris Elba (aka Stringer Bell, from The Wire) have taken to the brand. Idris refused to take a fee for the voiceover work of LUTA's forthcoming T.V. advert and has recently even been spotted on youtube wearing a LUTA T-shirt during his kickboxing training.

So why all of the sudden excitement? It seems to be a result of LUTA's favela heritage, its high-performance 'Pro' range and most importantly its social engagement. LUTA is actively trying to reinvest both in martial arts and in poor communities around the world.

Firstly, in terms of martial arts LUTA is now running a monthly seminar series in London with some of the world's leading fighters and strength and conditioning coaches. Participation is completely free and the instructors include some of the fighters listed above. Secondly, LUTA is committed to sharing at least as much of its profits with Fight for Peace, (a global martial arts charity), as it does with its shareholders, via a 50% profit-share scheme.

The charity Fight for Peace (Luta pela Paz in Portugese) was founded in The Complexo da Mare favela in Rio de Janerio eleven years ago by Luke Dowdney MBE, a former British amateur boxer.

Recognising the talent of the young people there but also seeing how limited the opportunities were, he opened a small boxing club. With hard work and dedication this rapidly began to grow into a full-blown academy with education, youth leadership, work-access programs and support services included in the core activities of the charity. Other martial arts besides boxing (such as capoeira and submission wrestling) were gradually introduced and in 2007 Fight for Peace went global, opening its newest academy in North Woolwich, London.

In a recent interview Luke who also founded LUTA clothing, said "I've been training these amazing inspirational young people who refuse to give in and get involved in gangs or violence, regardless of the challenges they face. Some of them are fight champions now; others are at university or on their way to becoming teachers and lawyers, having learned, through boxing and martial arts, the confidence and self-respect necessary to progress. This is the Real Strength that inspires LUTA; it is the spirit of never giving up in the face of adversity, to never stop believing you can be a champion in the ring or in life, whatever the odds."

LUTA’s had its first product review in Fighters Only magazine this month. The UK’s leading MMA publication selected LUTA’s Training shorts to review for its Special Brazil edition.
